1000 Cannon Valley Drive
NORTHFIELD TOWNHOME AND CONDOMINIUM COMMUNITIES – 1000 CANNON VALLEY DRIVE
The year was 1980. Developers once again eyed open land with visions of what could be built to meet the needs of the ever increasing population moving into Northfield. The housing authority remained vigilant during these periods of population growth and housing needs to protect the city’s Victorian character while striving to allow construction of housing appropriate for singles, single-families, and seniors. Traditional houses gave way to something different, the townhome and its sister, the condominium.
The townhomes built in 1982 in Northfield in the 1000 block of Cannon Valley Drive are known as 1000 Cannon Valley Drive. These low-rise homes consist of 36 one-story units built as a condominium community for seniors 55+. As such they have one or two bedrooms and single bath units and a one stall garage for each unit. They have an enclosed courtyard, common garden, and walking path, and are minutes away from stores, medical facilities, downtown Northfield, parks, and more.
In the decades since the construction of 1000 Cannon Valley Drive, other residential buildings have been built nearby, adding homes and condos to the neighborhood as well as a senior retirement community in the 900 block. Cannon Valley itself, however, has worked to update and improve units and community facilities rather than build additional units. Specific units now have bathrooms with newer vanities, floors, and walk-in showers. Many have three-season porches and large walk-in closets. Community amenities include a library and rooms for billiards, media and music, and a workshop. The Homeowner Association provides, among other things, seasonal exterior services. This condominium community provides maintenance – free, accessible living for its senior residents.
